Volunteer Opportunity at the Melbourne Space Program for Law Students

Who are we?

We are a team of law, STEM, business and marketing students, who are passionate about driving innovation and growth in the Australian space industry. In 2019, we became the first Australian student-led team to launch a satellite in 50 years. As part of this project, our Regulatory Team (comprised of law students from MLS) worked hard to ensure that MSP complied with all domestic and international regulations for space activity.

MSP is now expanding and maturing as a company. We are looking to build a long-term, sustainable business model, that will allow our students to work together, across disciplines, on space technology projects.

Regulatory Team: Volunteer Role

At MSP, you will have the unique opportunity to put theory into practice in a multi-disciplinary, in-house environment. As part of the Regulatory Team, you will conduct legal research, draft documents, review contracts, manage insurance, maintain good corporate governance, and ensure compliance with the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth).

Beyond this, you will also be working closely with our Business Team to develop a sustainable business model, generate sponsorships and secure grants. This is therefore a fantastic opportunity for students looking to develop both their legal and commercial acumen.

In your work, you will collaborate closely with our Engineering Team – helping to facilitate their space technology projects, which range from cube-satellites, to Artificial Intelligence and the design of autonomous systems.

The time commitment is a maximum of 10 hours/week. It will often be less demanding – however, we are looking for law students who will be able to take up the mantle and lead the team into the future. Therefore, the role is not suitable for students that already have a lot of competing commitments.

Who we are looking for:

  • Courage, initiative and drive

  • Strong teamwork and leadership skills

  • Passion for innovation

  • Proven academic success

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Genuine interest in the Australian space industry
